A student could organize their own set of pages under their own userpage. However, many wiki's prefer to keep all pages flat on the first level, since it gets into some difficulty sometimes to figure out what is a subclass of something else when you get into hierarchical naming. So when people are creating their own pages, reasonable length page names of a few words are encouraged, since there can be only one "Thoughts" page on the system.
Also, when dealing with hierarchies, I like to use "breadcrumbs" at the start of an item to show how I thought the page should fall within the Subjects . For example:
Subjects > History > Military > Naval
This is indented with use of simple CSS padding style. Some HTML tags are allowed directly in the pages for those who understand HTML.
NOTE: I noticed that when using more than one level of subdirectory, (one level is HomePages/Garnet for example), it is important to put the double square brackets around the whole page name, for example HomePages/PatMaddux/MetaWikiDiscussion
I made this page to answer some of your questions, since it's possible you might be blocked from completing an edit in progress, if I jump in the middle of your experiments and edit in the middle of what you are doing....
